- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less) - Abstract
- This thesis analyzes collective agreement coverage and working conditions in the Swedish equestrian sector, a field often characterized by long working hours, unpaid overtime, and insecure employment arrangements. While Sweden generally has high levels of collective agreement coverage, the equestrian industry stands out as a notable exception. According to the study, collective agreement coverage is high among riding schools, where approximately 91% of operations are covered, but it is as low as 7.5% in private stables.
Undeclared work is common in the sector, alongside informal employment arrangements such as “trainee positions,” where wages are frequently re-placed by benefits like housing and riding lessons.
These practices contribute to certain employers' disengagement from the formal labor system, driven by a lack of economic incentives and deeply ingrained workplace culture. Fur-thermore, many young workers, motivated by their passion for horses and aspirations for a career in the field, are willing to accept poorer working conditions at renowned employers, reducing the pressure on these businesses to join collective agreements.
Several measures are proposed to improve collective agreement coverage in the equestrian sector. Awareness campaigns targeting employees could in-crease understanding of the benefits of collective agreements, while eco-nomic incentives such as quality certifications and reduced insurance premi-ums could encourage employers to comply. Tailoring collective agreements to meet the sector's specific needs, such as through seasonal adjustments and support for further training, is also highlighted as a key strategy. Enhanced collaboration between authorities, such as the Swedish Tax Agency and the Swedish Work Environment Authority, is recommended to combat unde-clared work and strengthen compliance with labor laws.
In conclusion, a combination of education, economic incentives, structural reforms, and reinforced oversight is essential to increase collective agree-ment coverage and create a more sustainable and equitable labor market within the equestrian industry. (Less)
