- Abstract
- This thesis aims to understand how writing newspaper reporters work with the interview as a journalistic tool, to get what they experience is the perfect quote. To be clear, this thesis is not about the quote itself, but how to get it. The overall question is therefore:
(RQ) How can we understand the way writing journalists formulate their interview questions?
In order to answer the above question, I also need to explore: (RQ1) How does the journalist interact with his interviewee? (RQ2) What ethical considerations does a journalist make?

(RQ) How can we understand the way writing journalists formulate their interview questions?
In order to answer the above question, I also need to explore: (RQ1) How does the journalist interact with his interviewee? (RQ2) What ethical considerations does a journalist make?
The empirical material has been collected through semi-structured interviews with five experienced journalists who have vast experiences from using interview as a method in their reporting. The journalists were chosen based on newspapers with different geographical and demographic distribution; the regional newspaper Sydsvenskan, the daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet and the evening newspaper Aftonbladet, and on their widespread areas of expertise; sport, music, feature, crime and economics.
The theoretical framework applied to analyze the material is based on communicative action and media ethics. According to the analysis, it has been shown that the questions have been built up with a clear purpose, understanding of, and to some extent challenging, norms, as well as in order to create relationships, where the former appears to be the most significant.
The results from this essay can contribute knowledge for how journalists can concretely build up their questions in order to more effectively fulfill the purpose of the interview. This is relevant as neither interviewees nor journalists have unlimited energy or time, and is thus beneficial to both the space created between the journalist and its interviewee, as well as contributing to the larger perspective that works for a well-founded news delivery.
