Semi-structured interviews with Muslim immigrants in Malmö form the basis of this study, which employs a qualitative research approach to fully grasp their viewpoints and experiences. The findings indicate that the biased and often negative portrayal of Muslims and their countries of origin, makes many participants feel isolated from mainstream Swedish society. Participants agreed that the language and framing employed by Swedish news media frequently perpetuate negative stereotypes. Because of this the participants had developed a critical attitude toward Swedish news media as a result of their conscious efforts to consume news from alternative sources, such as social media or foreign media (like Al Jazeera and Middle East Eye). While some avoid Swedish news completely because they feel it misrepresents their realities, others utilize this as a strategy to offset news coverage. The study's principal finding is that social belonging and media trust are highly correlated. When individuals feel misrepresented, it affects not only their trust in journalism but also their perception of being part of Swedish society. Thus, media representation is essential for identity development and social cohesion in addition to being a means of information dissemination. (Less)
