Abstract
This thesis examines how journalists’ views on truth and objectivity are challenged under pressured circumstances. The purpose of the study is to analyze how the conditions of war and the specific challenges of war reporting affect journalistic ideals. The study focuses on how Swedish Middle East correspondents reason about truth and objectivity, as well as their perceptions of their professional roles and the challenges they face. The research is limited to the conflict in Gaza following Hamas’ attacks on Israel in October 2023 and is conducted as a qualitative interview study. The empirical material is based on interviews with Swedish correspondents who reported from the region before and after the fall of 2023. Using a theory-consuming... (More)
This thesis examines how journalists’ views on truth and objectivity are challenged under pressured circumstances. Using a theory-consuming approach, theories from Marcel Broersma, Greg McLaughlin, and Gaye Tuchman are applied to shed light on the journalist’s role and methods. The results highlight how war challenges journalistic ideals and provide insights into how foreign correspondents navigate questions of truth and objectivity in conflict zones, where such values are often difficult to uphold. We find that the role of the Middle East correspondent is not so much telling truth to power as doing an honest attempt to convey truthful information. The attempt is to a high degree trust-based. Regarding the war in Gaza and its polarization, the attempt has been unusually challenging in regards to obtaining information, maintaining an appearance of objectivity even when being objective, as well as navigating heightened pressures and the necessity for rapid decision-making.
