- Abstract
- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has estimated that around 120 million people are forcibly displaced around the world and about 32 million of them are refugees. We have done a thematic analysis and used Foucault's theory about biopolitics and Mbembe’s theory about necropolitics and also different ideas such as exclusion, expulsion, and externalization. This study shows that people were forced to migrate because of different reasons and they were also forced to do it through different paths. We identified three resources that were keys to managing to migrate. These were the network around people such as family and people they met on their migration journey, but also money and the community of all of the people that were on the migration journey together. We also identified two obstacles that made the migration journey harder for people and that were the different legislation and regulations around migration and also violence, power, and extortion. The conclusion of this study showed that refugees were victims of widespread violence and death on their migration journey and it also showed how the EU’s migration politics leads to life-or-death consequences for refugees.
