Sju Scener och en Foajé på Strömsholmen i Norrköping

- Abstract
- There is an abandoned island in the center of Norrköping. It lays in the river Motala Ström and its future is constantly debated in the local press. People are longing for something to happen here. Historically, it has been a vivid place with small cafés, restaurants and small stages. During the 19th century it became a popular meeting point for the bourgeoise population in Norrköping which at the time was one of Sweden’s most important industrial cities. Music, circus and other types of entertainment together with small cafés gave the island its spark and unique character.

My project Sju Scener och en Foajé på Strömsholmen i Norrköping (Seven Stages and one Foyer on Strömsholmen in Norrköping) aims to investigate if reintrodicing a cultural program could be a strategy to bring this island back to life. I am using the islands history in combination with my own experience of growing up in a circus together with architectural references to design a space oriented around good public space and culture. My goal has been to show the benefits that comes with designing a contemporary cultural center as a multi-building cluster rather than one big exploitation. My conclusion is that it creates good space for non-commercial values and weaves better with local public life. I hope that this kind of project can be helpful in designing better cities in the future. (Less) - Popular Abstract
