Abstract
The aim of this study was to understand, through interview-format podcasts, how individuals who have committed criminal acts from a young age described their pathway into crime and their process of desistance. Our study was based on a qualitative approach in the form of a thematic analysis of eight podcast episodes. We analyzed the empirical data using Howard S. Becker’s labeling theory (2006) and Thomas J. Scheff’s theory of shame, pride, and social bonds (1988). The results of the study indicated that the causes of criminal behaviour from a young age were family relationships, social exclusion, mental illness, social relations and the rationalization of criminal behaviour. Additionally, the findings indicated that the path to desistance... (More)

Additionally, the findings indicated that the path to desistance was a process influenced by community actors, crossroads and traumatic events, social relationships, employment, and work. We considered that our study could contribute to a greater perspective on young offenders and desistance. (Less)
