Abstract
The sex trade is a market in constant change and, as a result of digitalization, has been given different conditions in the form of new arenas, conditions, and risks. This study aims to shed light on how women who have lived in prostitution describe the sex trade, focusing on how they describe power and control in the different areas of the sex trade. We have taken our empirical material from four autobiographies written by women who have been in the Swedish sex trade. By performing a thematic analysis of the women's statements and using theories regarding gender and relevant research, we could distinguish several themes regarding the women's descriptions of power, control, and coping strategies in the sex trade. By performing a thematic analysis of the women's statements and using theories regarding gender and relevant research, we could distinguish several themes regarding the women's descriptions of power, control, and coping strategies in the sex trade. One conclusion we were able to draw is that the women mainly described differences in power and control based on whether their contact with sex buyers only took place online or during physical meetings. The women express control in contact with sex buyers online, in contrast they experience powerlessness when they meet sex buyers in real life. The results showed that the women used emotional distancing, risk-taking behavior, and adaptation to men's needs to manage power relations in the sex trade. (Less)
