Sustainable occupations and health in a life course perspective
- Abstract (Swedish)

(Less) - Abstract
- Background: People with autism have a different sensory processing which affects daily occupations at home and in society. Extensive research about children with autism reflects how sensory difficulties affect school and leisure activities which contribute to stress, poorer participation in social gatherings and tasks. Although adults with autism experience sensory difficulties, research rarely highlights this. In a few studies sensory difficulties are explained as contributing factors to difficulties in work, education and social contexts.
Purpose: To compile previous research that examines and analyses how sensory processing affects activities in everyday life for adolescents/adults with autism.

Purpose: To compile previous research that examines and analyses how sensory processing affects activities in everyday life for adolescents/adults with autism.
Method: An integrative literature-review, including 12 scientific articles, was conducted with an inductive approach. Data-analysis was performed in four steps; data-reduction, data-display, data-comparison, conclusion-drawing/verification. Literature search in PubMed, Cinahl and PsycInfo for article choice.
Result: All articles displayed that sensory processing could affect occupation in different constellations. An overall theme was defined; interaction between sensory processing and activity. Three categories were specified; sensory aspects in environment, personal strategies and supportive contacts/relationships promoting activity, and six subthemes.
Conclusion: The literature-review showed that sensory input in environment, personal strategies and supportive contacts/relationships have significance for how sensory processing relates to occupation in adolescents/adults with autism. However, more research is needed. (Less)
