Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine men’s and women’s experiences of honor-based violence through six podcast episodes and to identify any differences and similarities between the genders. The theoretical frameworks applied in this study to understand honor-based violence were intersectionality and Foucault’s theory of power. A purposeful selection was used to select six episodes in total. All six episodes were in an interview form three of the episodes were interviews with men and three of the episodes were interviews with women. The empirical data were processed using a content analysis and a thematic analysis for the collected data. The results of our study indicate that only the women in our study had experiences with forced... (More)

The results of our study indicate that only the women in our study had experiences with forced marriage or being pressured regarding their choice of partner. The findings also revealed that only the men in our study reported experiences of their sexuality being controlled or limited. Both men and women reported experiences of being controlled in their daily lives and had experiences of violence. We could also identify that both genders had experiences of witnessing honor killings. The difference between the genders lies in that women's restrictions were primarily focused on their appearances while the men's were more general. Our study showed that the reprisals that women and men experienced also varied, whereas the men described more serious reprisals. There was also a difference in the violence they experienced, where the men experienced more physical violence. We could also identify a difference in honour killings, where only cases involving the killing of women were described. Our findings are largely consistent with previous research on honor-based violence. However, we also identified a gap in the research in Sweden regarding the experiences of men and lgbtq communities within the context of honor-based violence. (Less)
