- The purpose of this thesis was to outline the normative structure and regulation of emotional expressions, i.e. the emotional regime, for young people concerning climate change. Climate change is a global issue implying several challenges for social workers, such as individuals experiencing emotional distress, which young people have been emphasized as especially vulnerable to. Youths’ abilities to process their emotions regarding climate change are dependent on their possibilities to express emotions. The possibilities for expressing emotions are in turn dependent of how emotions are depicted in mass media. A critical discourse analysis was therefore conducted to illuminate the discourse of youths’ emotions concerning climate change, in national Swedish news media during 2018-2024. The results of the study show that anxiety, fear, panic, worry, and hope are central emotions in the news media’s discourse regarding young people. In contrast, anger, guilt, and shame are rarely associated with young people. Furthermore, the study shows that gender and age are essential factors that influence expectations of expressing emotions, illustrating that the emotions of young women are more strictly regulated. In conclusion, the strictness of the emotional regime concerning climate change is determined by the emotion, object, and subject position in question. (Less)
