- Abstract
- This study investigated how healthcare counselors experience existential themes and how they are affected by and handle existential conversations. The method chosen for this study was qualitative semi-structured interviews. The targeted selection consisted of five counselors who all worked in health care. Hochschild's theory of emotional labor and Stein's existential ideas were applied when analyzing the results. One finding was that the counselors had similarities and differences in their definitions of existential themes. Another finding was that the counselors strived to use deep acting and empathy in conversations with patients, but that they were not always able to be emotionally present.
