(2025) PSYK12 20242Department of Psychology
- Abstract
- This study investigates the relationship between students' need to belong, perceived social norms, and alcohol consumption during initiation activities at Swedish universities. Using a sample of 83 first-year students, data were collected through a comprehensive survey addressing demographic, behavioral, and psychological factors. Multiple linear regressions were performed to test two hypotheses: first, that the need to belong and perceived social
norms positively predict alcohol consumption during initiation activities and that the need to belong moderates the relationship between these norms and alcohol consumption; second, that the need to belong is positively related to alcohol consumption during initiation activities but not to... Multiple linear regressions were performed to test two hypotheses: first, that the need to belong and perceived social
norms positively predict alcohol consumption during initiation activities and that the need to belong moderates the relationship between these norms and alcohol consumption; second, that the need to belong is positively related to alcohol consumption during initiation activities but not to general alcohol use. Results indicate that both the need to belong and social norms
significantly predict alcohol consumption during initiation activities. However, no interaction effect was observed, suggesting that the need to belong does not moderate the influence of social norms. Moreover, while the need to belong significantly predicted alcohol consumption during initiation activities, its effect on general alcohol use was non-significant.
These findings highlight the context-specific impact of belongingness on drinking behaviors and underline the importance of social dynamics during student initiation rituals. (Less) - Abstract (Swedish)

(Less)
