- Abstract
- Serious violent crimes have increased among children and adolescents in recent years in Sweden. This development has caused the Swedish government to press for increased collaboration and cooperation between social services and the police. This study aimed to take a closer look at how this current cooperation between social services and the police works, from the social services’ point of view. In this study, social workers from various municipalities in Sweden were interviewed about their experiences cooperating with the police. Through a thematic analysis and with the help of Platt's theory of "social traps" the empirical data was interpreted. The most prominent result has shown that there is a lack of cooperation between social services... (More)

The most prominent result has shown that there is a lack of cooperation between social services and the police's felony unit and that the police's confidentiality of preliminary investigations constitutes a major obstacle to the work of social services. Several social workers talked about strategies for better cooperation with the police, including different forms of collaboration, a more progressive interpretation of the confidentiality act, and extended contact points with the police. However, there is a risk of a new social trap arising when the social services cooperate too closely with the police. The trust of the clients might decline and they will no longer be interested in help from the social services. (Less)
