Abstract
A commonly discussed issue among professionals in human service occupations, such as healthcare workers and social workers, is Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS). This phenomenon occurs when one is exposed to others' trauma and, in turn, becomes secondarily traumatized. The risk of experiencing STS can be reduced through strong organizational support combined with various strategies that individuals can adopt, such as self-care. The purpose of this thesis was to examine the extent to which family therapists employed in social services in Skåne county suffered from STS. Additionally, the study explores the role of the organization in reducing the risk of STS among family therapists. The study employs a quantitative approach and is based on a... (More)
A commonly discussed issue among professionals in human service occupations, such as healthcare workers and social workers, is Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS). The study employs a quantitative approach and is based on a survey distributed to family therapists who worked in social services in Skåne County, specifically those engaged in therapeutic conversations with families. The survey was based on two validated measurement tools that assess the degree of STS and perceived organizational support. The results revealed that a significant proportion of these family therapists suffered from secondary traumatic stress. Furthermore, the findings highlight the importance of organizational support in preventing or reducing STS, with factors such as supervision, collegial support, and individual strategies related to self-care identified as particularly valuable.
