Abstract
This study aimed to analyze and critically review how secondary traumatization and related concepts are constructed based on how they are portrayed in modern non-fiction and which discourses emerge. Document analysis was chosen as a research method as it allows for an in-depth exploration of pre-existing data written by professionals in helping professions specifically on the subject and interest of the study. The search for and selection of the study’s empirical data was conducted through a targeted selection process, with a set of specific selection criteria, with both inclusive and exclusive factors to consider. Four non-fiction books, all written with an educational purpose aimed towards different caring professions, were chosen in the final selection. Using social constructivism and discourse theory as a theoretical framework and structure for the analysis, the study identified several discourses that were present in all the books. A certain discourse that described helping professions as a hazardous occupation with risk factors due to exposure to other people’s traumatic experiences was identified as the dominant one. Another prominent discourse centered around empathy as both a work tool and a risk factor to the professional. The need for a balanced and shared responsibility between the professional, organization, and society on how to prevent and manage secondary traumatic stress was emphasized in a third discourse. Other smaller discourses around the description of secondary traumatic stress were also identified. The study found that within all of these discourses, secondary traumatic stress was constructed as an existing condition that constitutes a risk in helping professions. The profession itself was constructed as a hazardous occupation with notions of religious callings and political and ideological stances. The professional and the client were also constructed as separate identities, with the professional as a martyr-like figure who sacrifices oneself through their work in helping others. In their absence, the client’s vulnerability and trauma formed their identity fully, and through this, they were constructed as a burden and possible health risk to the professional. (Less)
