- Abstract
- In Sweden, deacons are at increased risk of experiencing work-related stress and its consequences, including burnout. The research area on stress amongst deacons, or Christian social workers in general, is limited which motivates research on this area. By looking at the two organizational theories of role stress and effort-reward imbalance, this study aims to examine the linkages between stress amongst Swedish deacons and the following three variables: (1) experience of vague work assignments and inner conflict related to work, (2) experience of contributing with more work effort than receiving rewards, and lastly, (3) the frequency of work together with other deacons. Data was collected through a survey sent to all deacons employed in the... (More)

Data was collected through a survey sent to all deacons employed in the Diocese of Lund, with 74 respondents, inspired by questions from the role stress and effort-reward imbalance questionnaires. The results based on (1) and (2) show that a higher level of role stress is associated with a higher level of stress, and the same for a higher level of effort-reward imbalance. The results from variable (3) indicate no significant correlation between the frequency of work with other deacons and stress. Lastly, an unexpected result was discovered through the open-ended question: One factor causing stress amongst some deacons is seeing that society is failing to help vulnerable groups. (Less)
