- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

- Abstract
- This study aimed to explore how different identities are made possible in day care centers for individuals with cognitive impairment, as well as the motives described for first attending a day care center. The material consisted of 14 semi-structured interviews with participants from a total of 6 day care centers in southern Sweden. Through reflexive thematic analysis, five themes were generated. The findings highlight various motives for first attending a day care center, including loneliness and motives which involve other persons, including respite for family caregivers. The results also illustrate how the day care center can be understood as an accepting space, where participants’ relative passivity can be interpreted as part of an... (More)

The results also illustrate how the day care center can be understood as an accepting space, where participants’ relative passivity can be interpreted as part of an appreciated reduction in demands placed on them. The social interaction occurring at the day care center can further be understood as a result of the day care center functioning as an adapted social environment, where identities in interaction are enabled. Practical implications of this study include the recommendation that day care centers should work towards providing this group with adapted and accepting social environments. Additionally, healthcare professionals should emphasize the possibility of achieving health-promoting identities and convey how such identities can be facilitated. (Less)
