- Abstract
- Background: The age of children and adolescents affects how they understand and cope with their sibling's cancer. Previous research has shown that siblings of children with cancer are at greater risk of developing difficulties, but their own experiences have often not received sufficient attention. Through a family-centered approach and interpersonal theory, healthcare professionals can take greater account of the young relatives' needs for support and information. Purpose: To investigate children and adolescents' experiences of living with a sibling with pediatric cancer. Method: A literature review with an inductive approach was used to compile evidence-based knowledge on the subject. An integrated analysis was conducted of eleven... (More)

Purpose: To investigate children and adolescents' experiences of living with a sibling with pediatric cancer. Method: A literature review with an inductive approach was used to compile evidence-based knowledge on the subject. An integrated analysis was conducted of eleven included studies retrieved from CINAHL and PubMed. Results: After the compilation, five themes were identified: emotional reactions, impact on psychological development, changed family dynamics, changes in schooling and social conditions, and coping with the new life situation. Conclusion: When a family member is diagnosed with cancer, the entire family is affected. Siblings therefore need to be included in the situation to facilitate coping with the emotions and changes that arise in connection with the diagnosis. Even though siblings' experiences of cancer have been well researched, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding how healthcare professionals should best meet siblings when a child in the family is seriously ill. Resultat:... (More)
