- This study’s aim is to shed some light on the topic of garden archaeology in Sweden. This
is done by introducing the reader to the topic as a whole, with its methods and its history not only in
Sweden. Garden Archaeology is a relatively new focus within archaeology and therefor in need of an
introduction. The main focus is the concept of ideal versus reality in higher status gardens from the
18th and 19th century. Two case studies were chosen, Frisens Park in Swedish Uppland and Axmar
Bruk in Swedish Gästrikland. Both case studies are individually studied and compared both to the
ideals coming from the continent and compared to each other. This approach is used to show how
