- Abstract
- This thesis examines the silence as phenomenon in the Gospel of Mark. The study aims to demonstrate how the author uses deliberate rhetorical device to convey the Gospel's message. The study examine three different pericopes: Mark 3:4, Mark 15:15 and Mark 16:8 through a narrative analysis employing a rhetorical approach. By examining the Gospel's discourse, characters, and theological themes, this study explores how silence functions throughout the narrative. The analysis reveal that speech predominantly drives the discourse forward. The narrative is marked by conflicts central to the Gospel, including power struggles between Jesus and both the social and cosmic orders. At the same time, the discourse contains narrative gaps that require the audience to interpret or fill in the silence. For instance, Jesus' silence before Pilate in Mark 15:5 serves as a rhetorical device, leaving the question of his identity unresolved and prompting deeper reflection from the audience. Character analysis highlights the significance of both speech and actions in shaping the audience's opinion. Minor characters, despite having limited dialogue, are often portrayed positively through their actions. This demonstrate how silence can "speak" when paired with meaningful behavior. The overarching theological theme in the Gospel of Mark is the arrival of the kingdom of God. This theme is conveyed not only through the conflicts within the narrative but also through the characters’ responses to Jesus negotiation of the kingdom, both verbal and non-verbal. Other themes, such as the role of discipleship, emphasize the importance of balancing speech and silence in bearing witness to the kingdom of God. While silence may sometimes be a preferable or strategic choice, it is ultimately through both words and actions that disciples are called to reveal God's reign. (Less)
