However to the modern consumer of interiors the current discourse clearly equates the personality of the individual, through the idea of personal taste, to be reflected in the living space, as the highest goal. This intellectual history thesis seeks to unravel the discourse of the reflection of the self in once home, and the idea of well-being as attainable through the harmony of this relationship between inner and outer reflection. The outer as a reflection of the inner was a prominent idea in Victorian England as related to ideas of moral well-being as made notorious in Oscar Wildes The Picture of Dorian Gray – a young man able to hide his immoral life as his portrait takes on the deteriorating outer qualities supposed by an immoral way of life. The industrial manufacturing of interior artefacts onset the consumer society still currently prevalent, and the ideas of Good Taste and Elegance become guiding stars to the individual wishing to stay in upper society circles, as wealth no longer necessitated noble pedigree in a time where the bourgeois class gained standing. In fin-de-siecle Vienna, art became the highest pillar of morality to the young generation, and the sword of truth against the false artistry of architectural historicism and imitation materials. John Ruskin and William Morris ideas of design, and its crafting process as a tool towards a better society, in Vienna centered toward the bettering of the well-being of man and society through truthful art. The goal was modernity – art true to its own time in both painting, fashion, architecture and interior design. The most polemic critiques and voices of this Viennese movement was Karl Kraus and Adolf Loos and the discourse penned by Loos a wave felt to this day, as both his written and built work inspired the Bauhaus, and Modernist Architecture.
