Abstract
With the recent rise of virtual reality (VR), there is need to explore in the opportunities of VR eye tracking, particularly in UX research and usability testing. This thesis aims to investigate how eye tracking in VR can be used in usability testing of inflight entertainment (IFE) systems and identify its advantages and disadvantages.
The study's process was executed iteratively with a development phase and a testing phase. During the development phase, three eye tracking visualisation methods were implemented into a flight simulation in VR - gaze pointer, real time heat maps and post heat maps. The eye tracking methods were then used as a method in usability testing of an IFE system to analyse users' behaviour and attention when using... (More)

The study's process was executed iteratively with a development phase and a testing phase. During the development phase, three eye tracking visualisation methods were implemented into a flight simulation in VR - gaze pointer, real time heat maps and post heat maps. The eye tracking methods were then used as a method in usability testing of an IFE system to analyse users' behaviour and attention when using the system. By using the eye tracking data, along with interviews and questionnaires, insights on usability issues and areas of improvements were discovered. The implemented gaze pointer and real time heat map was used to identify usability issues in the IFE system by enabling the observation of users' gaze movements. The implemented post-heat map was used to discover patterns in users' eye movements and provide insights that can be used for cabin designs. Although there are many advantages of the implemented eye tracking method, the main disadvantages are the time-consuming processes of implementation and analysis and its limitation to obtaining a comprehensive analysis from multiple test sessions. Further development and research are needed in this domain to broaden the discovery of how VR eye tracking can be used in usability testing of IFE systems. (Less)
