- Abstract
- This paper will be a study of the burial mounds from the Scandinavian bronze age. The purpose of this is to examine the phenomenon of repeatedly reusing these monuments for burial practices, even centuries after they were constructed. By comparing different burial mounds and how their graves are related to each other through practice theory, the aim is to explain the significance of these monuments for the prehistoric ruling class and their symbolic value to keep using the monuments for burial practices. The archaeological material for this study is taken from an area in the south-eastern part of Scania, Sweden, which consist of four burial mounds from the early to middle period of the Scandinavian bronze age.

The archaeological material for this study is taken from an area in the south-eastern part of Scania, Sweden, which consist of four burial mounds from the early to middle period of the Scandinavian bronze age.
This study proves that the practice of reusing the burial monuments had a deep symbolic meaning for the people in prehistoric times, and that both the construction and the placement of the graves indicate that there existed a consciousness for preserving the older graves. There also exists an interest to symbolically ‘connect’ the deceased with the other graves by consciously placing the graves in close proximity to the older graves. The reasoning behind this is that the descendants of the deceased by doing this creates a symbolic connection between them and the ancestors, creating a ritual bond between the deceased rulers and those who came before. This is also a means of creating a legitimate claim for the deceased's family to rule the surrounding territory. (Less)
