Abstract
It is well known that artistic activities facilitate the communication of thoughts and feelings and tend to create physical and mental relief through the creative process.
Art therapy is a treatment method that uses artistic activities and artistic materials in combination with a psychotherapeutic relationship and with psychological theory. This method is utilized to a relatively small extent in Swedish healthcare compared to many other countries. The aim of this study was to investigate how art therapists, who work actively with clients, feel that art therapy affects the client's emotional, social, and/or cognitive functions, as well as what effects the material can have on the interaction with the outside world. The material was... (More)

The aim of this study was to investigate how art therapists, who work actively with clients, feel that art therapy affects the client's emotional, social, and/or cognitive functions, as well as what effects the material can have on the interaction with the outside world. The material was collected through semi-structured qualitative interviews with seven art therapists and was analyzed using phenomenological analysis, which aims to generate rich and deep descriptions of how individuals experience phenomena. The theory used was self-determination theory. This study indicates that art therapy can effectively help people manage and heal difficult situations in their lives. The paper's main conclusion was that art therapy has the potential to contribute to a positive identity for the client and to a stronger sense of self. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
