Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
This study investigated how psychodynamic psychotherapists with sexological competence work with sexuality in therapy with a particular focus on the constructive and challenging aspects. The study is theoretically anchored in the sexological PLISSIT-model and psychodynamic theory. They were interviewed using semi-structured interviews and the empirical data was analyzed using critical realist reflexive thematic analysis. This study investigated how psychodynamic psychotherapists with sexological competence work with sexuality in therapy with a particular focus on the constructive and challenging aspects. The study is theoretically anchored in the sexological PLISSIT-model and psychodynamic theory. Seven participants, who had received further education or training in sexology at their workplaces, participated in the study. They were interviewed using semi-structured interviews and the empirical data was analyzed using critical realist reflexive thematic analysis. Through sexological training, the informants had developed a language, knowledge and norm-critical thinking that made it possible to create a permissive atmosphere that invited sexological themes in therapy. This basis made it possible for the psychotherapists to work therapeutically to raise awareness of how patients' attachment patterns and personality structure affected their choice of love and objects. However, the therapists themselves were more challenged in working with sexual transference/countertransference which also involved the therapist's unconscious and conscious reactions. This is in accordance with the PLISSIT-model, as relevant themes illustrated different levels of working therapeutically and sexologically. The results show that sexology should be integrated in psychotherapist and counsellor training to be able to treat the whole person in psychotherapy. Concrete suggestions are made for interventions to integrate sexuality into psychotherapist and counsellor training, and more research on sexual transference/countertransference in psychotherapy is called for.
