- Abstract
- That an additional tariff of 25 percent could go unnoticed in global trade might seem unlikely, but the findings of this study suggest exactly that. Against the backdrop of escalating trade tensions between the EU and the US, this study examines both the immediate and short-term effects of the EU's temporary additional tariff of 25 percent on the import of exercise equipment. By focusing on the temporary additional tariff, the analysis explores three distinct phases: the period before the tariff's implementation, its immediate impact during enforcement, and the short-term effects after its removal. Using data from 2018 to 2022 and an OLS regression model, which accounts for country-specific and seasonal variations, the results reveal,... (More)

By focusing on the temporary additional tariff, the analysis explores three distinct phases: the period before the tariff's implementation, its immediate impact during enforcement, and the short-term effects after its removal. Using data from 2018 to 2022 and an OLS regression model, which accounts for country-specific and seasonal variations, the results reveal, contrary to expectations, no statistically significant impact on the import volumes of exercise equipment. This unexpected finding raises critical questions about the policy's effectiveness. Was the tariff's impact shielded by external shocks such as COVID-19, was the tariff too low to trigger substantial changes, or was the timeframe too short for importers to adjust their trade partnerships? By analyzing both immediate and short-term consequences, this study highlights the need for further research to explain why the temporary additional tariff had no observable effect on the imports of exercise equipment.
