This thesis project explores the significance of public spaces in shaping society, culture, and individual identity, emphasizing their role in promoting democratic values and self-realization. Public spaces, such as squares and marketplaces, serve as platforms for social interaction, economic activity, and cultural continuity. The design of these spaces reflects societal values and historical contexts, influencing the development and popularity of cities. The report focuses on the transformation of Malmö’s Norra Sorgenfri district, highlighting its shift from an industrial area to one fostering social communities and sustainable residential housing. The integration of adaptive reuse and new architectural orders is key to this transformation, which impacts on several scales.
The development of Norra Sorgenfri represents a broader trend in Malmö’s urban planning, balancing historical preservation with future growth. The area’s design strategy incorporates cultural hubs, shared resources, and local businesses, fostering community engagement and a strong sense of place. Green spaces and pedestrian-friendly elements further contribute to the vision of a sustainable and accessible urban environment. The project also emphasizes the integration of food culture with the urban fabric, creating a vibrant ecosystem where visitors engage with locally sourced and sustainable food practices.
The architectural layout encourages interaction and flow while maintaining distinct functional spaces. The careful selection of materials, such as white tiling and steel, ensures durability while respecting the industrial heritage of the area. Additionally, educational spaces promote sustainable food practices, fostering community resilience and strengthening the connection between Malmö’s urban core and surrounding rural landscapes.
