Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Sexual satisfaction is an important part of sexual health, but opportunities for pleasurable sexual experiences can become limited by norms and ideals. This study therefore aimed to qualitatively examine the sexual ideals and norms experienced by individuals in Sweden, to quantitatively investigate how much individuals agree with these norms, how closely their own sexual practices align with prevailing norms, and whether these aspects correlate with sexual satisfaction. A convenience sample (N = 457) was recruited for an online survey. 347 participants provided at least one free-text response regarding sexual ideals. A reflexive thematic analysis resulted in four themes concerning sexual norms and ideals: Bodies, gender, behavior,... (More)

A reflexive thematic analysis resulted in four themes concerning sexual norms and ideals: Bodies, gender, behavior, sexuality and love should be understood through the dichotomy male/female; Good sex is loving, monogamous and heterosexual; Sex is something everyone should have, want to have and value, but also something that only certain people deserve and Sex should be enjoyable and effortless – and this is achieved through distinct roles and clear expectations. Participants reported relatively low agreement with sexual norms and relatively low alignment between ideals and own sexual practices. A significant, weak negative correlation was observed between partner-/activity-oriented sexual satisfaction and the alignment between ideals and one's sexual practices. Sexual satisfaction did not correlate significantly with norm agreement. The study provides rich descriptions of cultural sexual norms and ideals in Sweden, offering a valuable complement to theories about sexual norms. The results also show that the norms poorly reflect the population’s sexual practices, highlighting the importance of critical discussions about norms. (Less)
