Sauna Raft: Concept and Construction

Abstract
This report starts by delivering a statement of its purpose, namely, to explore and learn from the entire building process, through the construction of a small sauna on a raft. It begins with a brief inventory of bathing culture and its history throughout the world before arriving at the Finnish sauna and the bathing culture of the Swedish west coast. The project and its concept is then introduced. This consist of an architectural program of five criteria, relevant referential projects, sketches, explanations and inspirations together with a presentation and analysis of the building site. This report starts by delivering a statement of its purpose, namely, to explore and learn from the entire building process, through the construction of a small sauna on a raft. It begins with a brief inventory of bathing culture and its history throughout the world before arriving at the Finnish sauna and the bathing culture of the Swedish west coast. The project and its concept is then introduced. This consist of an architectural program of five criteria, relevant referential projects, sketches, explanations and inspirations together with a presentation and analysis of the building site. Following that is the actual building process and the main part of the report: how to build a sauna raft. It starts with presenting the plan for the project and is then divided into different stages, each focusing on one separate building component or process in somewhat chronological order. The report is then concluded with a small glimpse into the inauguration of the sauna raft followed by an evaluation and a reflection of the project and its process. (Less)
