Abstract (Swedish)

(Less)
Abstract
This master thesis describes the process of developing a new kind of beehive that aims
to improve the accessibility of urban beekeeping and improve the survival chances of
the bee population. By emulating bees' natural living conditions to a greater extent, the Allemanskupa hopes to decrease the need of harmful pesticides and acids to keep the beehive disease free.

This project is done in collaboration with ConCellae, a Swedish company specializing
in applying research innovations from Lund University relating to the discovery of
honey bees natural production of probiotics, which consisted of 13 cooperating lactic
acid bacteria species.

honey bees natural production of probiotics, which consisted of 13 cooperating lactic
acid bacteria species.

In recent years, the population of bees that are essential for our ecosystems has
diminished significantly. It has been suggested that the reason for the bees' newly found susceptibility to diseases is caused by the lack of the lactic acid bacteria inside of the beehives, which is disrupted when their natural food source is harvested.

Using Goal Directed Design methodology, this thesis resulted in the development of a
new beehive concept as a full scale model and accompanied production method, as well
as a small scale physical prototype. (Less)
