Accountability: a Lived Experience

Abstract
This thesis explores the research object of accountability, drawing from multiple fields of study to develop a greater nuance and richness to the construct, and introducing additional types of accountability that may assist organisations in defining accountability in a manner that will positively influence individual and organisational learning post event.
A study based on Smith’s Interpretative Phenomenological Approach utilised semi-structured interviews to elicit knowledge of accountability from the perspective of vessel Masters, to develop an understanding of their lived experience of accountability’s application to their role in command of a vessel, and barriers they identify that hinder learning post a maritime event.

This thesis explores the research object of accountability, drawing from multiple fields of study to develop a greater nuance and richness to the construct, and introducing additional types of accountability that may assist organisations in defining accountability in a manner that will positively influence individual and organisational learning post event.
A study based on Smith’s Interpretative Phenomenological Approach utilised semi-structured interviews to elicit knowledge of accountability from the perspective of vessel Masters, to develop an understanding of their lived experience of accountability’s application to their role in command of a vessel, and barriers they identify that hinder learning post a maritime event.
The thesis concludes that accountability types can influence whether it is perceived as negative or positive, traditional types such as hierarchical, outcome and backward inhibit learning through development of a threatening environment and individualise, while forms such as socialising or lateral increase trust, team commitment and support group members holding each other accountable. Accountability can be viewed as legitimate or illegitimate and is impacted by trust and the perception of those who undergo surveillance, of those who conduct it. (Less)
