- Abstract
- Incest against children is a widespread social problem as it causes extensive psychological and physical harm to the child. Previous research has shown that the most harmful form of incest is the one that occurs between fathers and daughters. A qualitative method has been used where six autobiographies of women who have experienced incest by their fathers have been analyzed using a narrative analysis approach. The results show that the women experienced an insecure relationship with their parents, with the relationship to the father being ambivalent—both too close and too distant—while the... (More)

A qualitative method has been used where six autobiographies of women who have experienced incest by their fathers have been analyzed using a narrative analysis approach. The results show that the women experienced an insecure relationship with their parents, with the relationship to the father being ambivalent—both too close and too distant—while the mother was perceived as distant and non-protective. These insecure relationships created feelings of shame and low self-esteem, which affected their ability to form secure and intimate relations in their adulthood. Growing up with incest also resulted in deep-rooted shame and an avoidance behavior to escape the painful experiences and feelings of shame. Lastly, all six women emphasized the importance of confronting their past to heal from their trauma and to take a step toward self-acceptance. (Less)
