- Abstract
- This study examines how popular music reflects and shapes norms surrounding sexual consent through a discourse analysis of song lyrics from the Swedish Top 100 list of 2023. - This study examines how popular music reflects and shapes norms surrounding sexual consent through a discourse analysis of song lyrics from the Swedish Top 100 list of 2023. The research aims to critically analyze depictions of sexual interactions and consent in music, focusing on how these portrayals influence cultural perceptions of consent and gender roles. The methodology involves a qualitative approach, employing critical discourse analysis to interpret explicit and implicit messages about sexual consent and communication in song lyrics. The findings reveal that music often reproduces and reinforces traditional gender norms, with men depicted as sexually active and women as passive recipients of male desire. The study identifies a double standard in the portrayal of sexual activity, where men are celebrated for having multiple partners, while women are stigmatized for the same behavior. Additionally, the analysis highlights the normalization of alcohol and drug use in sexual contexts, which can obscure the boundaries of consent. The study also uncovers instances where consent is implicitly linked to material exchanges, such as luxury gifts, further complicating the understanding of voluntary sexual interactions. The results suggest a discrepancy between the portrayal of consent in popular music and the principles outlined in Swedish consent legislation, which emphasizes the necessity of explicit and voluntary agreement in sexual encounters. The study concludes that popular music plays a significant role in shaping societal norms around consent and gender, often perpetuating harmful stereotypes and behaviors. (Less)
