- Abstract
- The Swedish government's new interest in existential health's impact on the population, alongside the uncertain professional role of the school social worker (SSW), motivates research on their discretion and potential within the subject of existential health. How Swedish schools contribute to students' existential health is under investigation and there are a couple of initiatives in different municipalities directed towards promoting students' existential health. The goal of this qualitative study is to examine how SSWs interpret their work with students' existential questions (EQ). The study takes a phenomenological approach towards three different questions: 1) how SSWs discuss the subject of students EQ’s, 2) how SSWs speak of their... (More)

How Swedish schools contribute to students' existential health is under investigation and there are a couple of initiatives in different municipalities directed towards promoting students' existential health. The goal of this qualitative study is to examine how SSWs interpret their work with students' existential questions (EQ). The study takes a phenomenological approach towards three different questions: 1) how SSWs discuss the subject of students EQ’s, 2) how SSWs speak of their current psychosocial work about individual students' EQ, and 3) how SSWs speak of their current psychosocial work about EQ’s in groups of students. Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted consisting of SSWs from different backgrounds. Erik H. Erikson’s psychosocial theory and Micheal Lipsky’s public service theory were used as theoretical frameworks. The primary findings showed that SSWs mainly highlight questions related to student's identity, future, and relationships regarding the subject. All participants expressed a need to address these questions but participants working with older students expressed a larger one. All participants expressed that they saw possibilities to work within this subject to some extent. Strategies to address the individual students' questions were similar to those you would find other SSWs discuss. In groups of students, the strategies differed more between SSWs who had taken part in other initiatives regarding students' existential health. These results raise the question of the potential of SSW’s involvement in working with students EQ’s, especially in groups of students. (Less)
