Var finns vikingahamnen i Löddeköpinge?: en jämförande studie med andra vikingatida handelsplatser: Birka, Hedeby och Ribe

- Abstract
- In order to get an answer to the question of where a Viking-era harbor could possibly be placed in Löddeköpinge, indicators such as Lödde kar, Lödde å, the seasonal market place at Vikhögsvägen in Löddeköpinge, the permanent settlement in Löddeköpinge, the church village in Löddeköpinge, the burial field and the church in Löddeköpinge and Borgeby's trelleborg need to be studied in relation to the common factors found in Viking Age trade and craft sites in topographically similar locations along waterways in Scandinavia. I have chosen to do a comparative study of Ribe, Birka and Hedeby to find similarities that may have influenced the location of a harbor in Löddeköpinge. Ribe, Birka and Hedeby are well-

I have chosen to do a comparative study of Ribe, Birka and Hedeby to find similarities that may have influenced the location of a harbor in Löddeköpinge. Ribe, Birka and Hedeby are well-
documented Viking trade and craft sites with a status of emporia type C, where Löddeköpinge cannot demonstrate the same far-reaching urban development but wharves, harbors and marketplaces may have been designed in a similar way thanks to the knowledge that spread within the network that developed through trade during the Viking Age. In addition to the comparative study of Ribes, Birkas and Hedeby's port development and location in the landscape with Löddeköpinges, I have used a phosphate map, topographical conditions, soil type map and historical maps and water level at the time to analyze Löddeköpinges’ possibilities to find a possible location for a Viking-age harbor along the Lödde å. Harald Blåtand’s choice of placing a trelleborg in Borgeby along the Lödde å and next to Löddeköpinge indicates strategic location based on communication opportunities, trading
place and royal presence but also religious change. (Less)
