Abstract
The background of this bachelor thesis is that knowledge of Swedish national identity appears to have been lost and needs to be reawakened. The aim is to investigate whether there is something typically Swedish that has been passed down through generations and which needs to be rediscovered and reinforced for a more secure future in Sweden. Using conceptual history as a method, the analysis explores the development of Swedish national identity from the 1950s to the 2020s. Conformism can... (More)
The background of this bachelor thesis is that knowledge of Swedish national identity appears to have been lost and needs to be reawakened. The aim is to investigate whether there is something typically Swedish that has been passed down through generations and which needs to be rediscovered and reinforced for a more secure future in Sweden. To meet the aim of the analysis and guide the thesis, the following question is posed: Is there a typical Swedish national identity and culture that is foundational and important to protect in order to ensure security, learning and community for the future? Using conceptual history as a method, the analysis explores the development of Swedish national identity from the 1950s to the 2020s. Conformism can be seen as a guiding principle of Swedish national identity, which encompasses freedom, equality, and the pursuit of security. What unites Swedish citizens and forms a shared frame of reference is the democratic tradition, consisting of lifelong learning in solidarity, personal responsibility and mutual consideration. A national cultural canon, could serve as a foundation in safeguarding Swedish national identity and realizing its ideals. (Less)
