- Abstract
- Europe in the 1950:s was in a time of considerable change and prosperity. World War II resulted in a stronger state and a divergence in how Europe chose to finance their pension systems. A mixture of comparative method and ideological analysis was used to perceive the development of the pension systems between countries. The theories developed by Esping-Andersen were used to create ideal types to evaluate the pension systems. The results show that the ATP-system in Sweden was a shift to a social democratic ideal type, while West Germany sought a compromise that resulted in a conservative ideal type. The pension systems between countries were different even though Sweden had a more drastic shift in ideal type than West Germany. In conclusion, the divergence between countries can be explained by the dominant political parties in each country. Sweden's Social Democrats enabled a more radical break from the previous system, while in West Germany, the compromise between parties was necessary to implement the reform. (Less)
