- In recent years we have seen radical right-wing populist parties emerge into government coalitions or other influential positions within parliaments. In Sweden the first example of this is the Swedish Democrats who act as a support party within the current government coalition, Tidösamarbetet. The purpose of this study is to describe how the Swedish media portrays the Swedish Democrats while they are part of the government coalition. This is done with the framing theory and the mediatization theory to describe whether the medias portrayal is dominated by media logic or political logic. The results are then interpreted based on theories about the relationship between media and populism to examine whether the media can affect the normalization process of the Swedish Democrats as a political actor. To do this I conducted a qualitative content analysis on fifteen news articles from three of Sweden’s largest news providers. The results shows that whether the articles are dominated by political logic or media logic depends on the financing model of the news provider and that all three news providers have an impact on the normalization process of the Swedish Democrats, but in different ways depending on which logic that dominates the content.
