Abstract (Swedish)

Abstract
Background: Preoperative anxiety is commonly experienced prior to surgical procedures and anesthesia. This anxiety may stem from a lack of information, concerns about the surgery or anesthesia, potential complications, or the fear of death. High levels of preoperative anxiety are associated with negative outcomes, such as increased need for anesthetic agents, less stable vital signs, more postoperative pain and nausea, as well as poorer recovery and wound healing. Nurse anesthetists play a vital role in addressing and alleviating this anxiety, which is part of their function as patient advocates (Health Advocates).

Aim: To highlight the strategies used by nurse anesthetists to alleviate worry and anxiety in patients undergoing anesthesia.

Method: A systematic literature review was conducted using the databases PubMed, CINAHL and Embase. The results are based on 11 scientific articles that were assessed using the Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services (SBU) quality template for qualitative studies and analyzed through thematic analysis.

Results: The review identified several strategies employed by nurse anesthetists to reduce patients’ preoperative worry and anxiety. The findings resulted in three themes: "Reducing anxiety through interaction", "Creating trust in a vulnerable situation", and "Enhancing the patient’s sense of security". Subthemes included verbal communication and approach, non-verbal communication, relationship-building, involvement, environment and external factors, and medical and physiological support.

Conclusion: By applying these communicative, relational, and environmental strategies, nurse anesthetists can not only reduce patient anxiety and potentially decreasing the need for medication and improving postoperative recovery but also strengthen their role as patient representatives. (Less)
