Abstract
The following paper investigates the varying degrees of separatism in the Moldovan regions of Transnistria and Gagauzia. Through a comparative analysis it tries to answer the question of why Transnistria have not followed the Gagauzian way to a peaceful solution with the parent state of Moldova. By analysing and comparing both cases through four different variables it tries to find the most likely cause for a higher degree of separatism. The variables are drawn from theory of secessionism and literature on de facto unrecognized states. They are economic strength; historic symbolism; ethnic affinity; and the relationship towards a patron state. In the end it concludes that the variables are intertwined in complex ways. but that most arrows... (More)

The variables are drawn from theory of secessionism and literature on de facto unrecognized states. They are economic strength; historic symbolism; ethnic affinity; and the relationship towards a patron state. In the end it concludes that the variables are intertwined in complex ways. but that most arrows point towards the region’s relation towards its patron state, Russia, being the most important factor. It paints a clear picture of very strong ties between Moscow and Transnistria and less so between them and Gagauzia. In doing so it agrees with most existing literature. (Less)
