Abstract
This thesis examines how archival educators perceive their professional role and practice. The thesis focuses on three main themes: education, challenges and development. The question of whether the education and competence of the archival educators has an impact on the archival educational practice, or the professional status of the professional role is addressed, as well as what aspects or situations the archival educators perceive as challenging and difficult in their professional role. Finally, it asks how the professional role and practice of archival education can be developed. To answer the following questions, seven professional archival educators, employed at both public and private archives in Sweden, were interviewed.

By using professional theory, I was able to nuance the image of the archival education professional role. Two conceptual apparatuses were used, which are usually used to determine whether an occupation can be classified as a profession. The conceptual apparatuses were used to elaborate development methods for the professional role. To examine the influence of habitual behaviour and power structures on the professional role neo-institutional theory was used.

The study shows that there is a lack of knowledge about archival pedagogy both at a societal level and among managers and those in power in the archival field. The lack of knowledge is both due to and leads to insufficient resources. Lack of educational opportunities and varying competencies are also shown to hinder the development of the occupation. One way to promote the development of archival education, is to involve those in the archival field who are not archival educators, with emphasis on managers and those in power. Awareness and collaboration between them and archival educators are ways to promote uniformity and archival educational development, whilst also increasing general interest in archives. (Less)
