- Abstract
- Attempted suicide is the single greatest risk factor for a future suicide attempt, and suicide remains a major global health challenge. A recent addition to therapeutic methods for suicide prevention is the "Attempted Suicide Short Intervention Program" (ASSIP), which is currently being studied within psychiatric healthcare in Sweden. This study aimed to explore professionals’ experiences of working with ASSIP. The empirical material was gathered through qualitative semi-structured interviews with six therapists trained in ASSIP in southern Sweden. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, informed by the theoretical concepts of narrative, narrative competence, and transactional and relational conceptualizations of care. The main... The main findings show that therapists perceive their work with ASSIP as involving both opportunities and challenges related to the treatment structure. The structured nature of ASSIP appears to facilitate the formation of a therapeutic alliance, provide emotional relief for the professionals, and offer accessible care for patients. Furthermore, the results highlight the importance of active listening, as well as the therapists’ co-creative role in shaping the patient’s narrative. Finally, the structured framework of the method seems to enhance therapists’ sense of security in their professional role and increase the perceived meaningfulness of contributing to suicide prevention efforts. The title of the study is a quote from one of the therapists, illustrating the core mission of the clinician: to offer their time, presence, and genuine human engagement to individuals who have attempted to take their own lives. This study makes a valuable contribution to the research field by explicitly focusing on professionals’ experiences of the treatment method, offering a multifaceted perspective. This emphasis on the therapists’ viewpoint addresses a gap in current research, where the voices of professionals are often underrepresented despite their central role in the therapeutic process.
