- Public transport plays a key role in creating sustainable urban transport systems, particularly in meeting global sustainability targets and national transport policy goals. In dense urban environments limited street space leads to competition between different modes of transport such as between cycle lanes, on-street parking, and dedicated bus infrastructure. - Public transport plays a key role in creating sustainable urban transport systems, particularly in meeting global sustainability targets and national transport policy goals. In dense urban environments limited street space leads to competition between different modes of transport such as between cycle lanes, on-street parking, and dedicated bus infrastructure. One important factor affecting bus maneuverability is lane width. Despite Swedish national guidelines for road design (VGU) the interpretations vary which results in differing practices across municipalities. This study investigates how lane width affects bus maneuverability focusing on travel time and average speed. It also considers vehicle damage and operational challenges. Three types of streets are analysed: streets with dedicated bus lanes, mixed traffic streets without parking, and mixed traffic streets with on-street parking. The study is based on a combination of planning document analysis, a statistical analysis of automatic vehicle location data, incident report review, interviews with bus drivers, and experiments with different lane widths. On-street parking widths were also measured at three locations to estimate the space remaining for buses to manoeuvre. The results shows that maneuverability issues arise at 2.5 – 3 meters especially with parked cars. However, the lane width alone has limited effect on travel times and incidents. A minimum lane width of 3.25 meters is recommended for both mixed traffic and bus lanes with parking spaces dimensioned at 2.2 meters. Local conditions such as traffic volume, street design, and user behaviour must also be considered when determining the appropriate width. (Less)

Resultaten visar att framkomlighetsproblem uppstår vid 2,5–3 meters bredd, särskilt i närvaro av parkerade bilar. Körfältsbredden har dock ensamt en begränsad inverkan på restider och incidenter. En minsta körfältsbredd på 3,25 meter rekommenderas för både blandtrafik och busskörfält och parkeringsplatser rekommenderas att dimensioneras till 2,2 meter. Lokala förhållanden som trafikvolym, gatudesign och användarbeteende måste också beaktas vid fastställandet av lämplig bredd. (Less)
