Did Trump’s Steel Tariffs Imposed in 2018 Impact Swedish Steel Exports to the United States?

- Abstract
- In today’s increasingly trade protectionist world with substantial tariffs being announced by major economies, it is important to understand the effects of such measures. The United States (US) under the lead of the Trump administration has announced significant tariffs during 2025, one of which is a 25 percent tariff on steel imports. Similarly, during Trump’s first presidency term, the US imposed a 25 percent steel tariff in 2018. The fact that the exact same policy change was imposed during both presidency terms enables us to use history as a guide for the future. By analyzing what effect the 2018 steel tariff had on steel exports we aim to provide an evidence-based prediction for the effects of the 2025 steel tariff. This study... (More)

This study utilizes the Synthetic Control Method (SCM) to investigate whether the 2018 steel tariffs impacted Swedish steel exports to the US. Sweden is a relatively large steel-producing nation, with a highly specialized steel sector. Our findings state that the 25 percent steel tariff resulted in a 31.4 percent decline in Swedish steel exports to the US. (Less)
