Abstract
This study aimed to examine how language use in specialist psychiatric care within Region Skåne constructs and influences attitudes toward and treatment of patients with personality disorders. From a critical discourse analytical perspective, the study sought to highlight how healthcare professionals use and understand various terms, how this language shapes patients’ experiences, and how language use differs between outpatient and inpatient psychiatric care. To investigate the study's research questions, qualitative methods were employed, including three focus group interviews: two with staff from psychiatric outpatient and inpatient care, respectively, and one with patient representatives. The results indicated that the language used... (More)
This study aimed to examine how language use in specialist psychiatric care within Region Skåne constructs and influences attitudes toward and treatment of patients with personality disorders. The results indicated that the language used around patients with personality disorders in specialist psychiatric care in Region Skåne is characterized by discursive and social practices that both reproduce and, to some extent, challenge negative perceptions. Furthermore, the results suggested that different professional affiliations contribute to different interpretative frameworks and conditions for patient interaction. Differences were also observed between inpatient and outpatient care, where structural and organizational conditions—factors beyond discursive logic—affect how language is formed and used. Finally, the results also showed how the discourse and discursive practices surrounding the diagnosis of personality disorder have consequences for patients’ self-image as well as their experience of and relationship to psychiatric care.
