Abstract
In today's society, there's a focus on the body, which advises us to take care of our bodies and keep them fit. In a sports environment, these expectations can be even stronger. This can make athletes an extra vulnerable group to suffering from an eating disorder. In this context, the sports coach can have an important role as they can identify and pay attention to eating disorders in young athletes at an early stage. The purpose of this study is therefore to create an understanding of what knowledge sport coaches have about eating disorders, to examine their role and work, and what they may need to be able to identify eating disorders in youth athletes. Our study is qualitative, and we have conducted 9 semi-structured interviews with sports coaches who train youth athletes in football, athletics, or orienteering. The results in this study show that the majority of sports coaches lack education about eating disorders, and several lack experience in the subject. Their opinion shows the complexity of detecting eating disorder behaviors in an individual. Knowledge, relationship building, and acting as a role model for the youth can help identify eating disorders in youth athletes. By investigating this context, we can contribute to developing social interventions and prevention work against eating disorders in society and social work. (Less)
