Sustainable occupations and health in a life course perspective
Abstract
Background: Social media use on mobile devices is today a natural part of everyday life. Young women are those using social media the most, and are therefore also exposed to its negative effects. Today there is limited research on how occupational balance is affected by social media use.
Aim: To investigate how the use of social media on mobile devices affect the experience of occupational balance among young women.
Method: A qualitative research design with two focus groups consisting of five and four participants between 21 and 25 years was applied. The study utilized an inductive approach. A manifest content analysis was performed.
Result: Five categories were identified regarding how social media influenced the experience of... (More)

Method: A qualitative research design with two focus groups consisting of five and four participants between 21 and 25 years was applied. The study utilized an inductive approach. A manifest content analysis was performed.
Result: Five categories were identified regarding how social media influenced the experience of activity balance: Communication and relationships are perceived as meaningful, A simple activity with ambivalent experiences, Intentional use is experiences as meaningful, Creating expectations perceived as stressful and Taking time away from other daily activities.
Conclusion: The study contributed to initial understanding of the complexity of social media and activity balance, with dual experience permeating the entire result. Social media use promote relationships and communication but also postpone everyday activities and affect the experience of meaningfulness. Further research is needed to draw broader conclusions. Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
