- Abstract
- The main purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between high
school students' attitudes toward criminality and their level of sense of coherence
(SOC), as well as whether this relationship differs between boys and girls. To gain
a deeper understanding of background factors such as gender and socioeconomic
conditions, a number of preliminary analyses were initially conducted. These
aimed to investigate potential gender differences in the key variables and to
analyze whether socioeconomic conditions were related to attitudes toward
criminality or levels of SOC. The study was conducted as a correlational study
with a cross-sectional design among 214 high school students in southern
Sweden. The preliminary analyses... (More) - The main purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between high

with a cross-sectional design among 214 high school students in southern
Sweden. The preliminary analyses showed significant gender differences in both
attitudes toward criminality and levels of SOC. Boys generally exhibited more
permissive attitudes toward crime as well as higher levels of SOC compared to
girls. However, no significant associations were identified between
socioeconomic conditions and the studied variables. In the analysis of the study’s
main research question using Spearman's rank correlation, a significant but weak
positive relationship emerged between participants' attitudes toward criminality
and their level of SOC (ρ = 0.18, p = 0.010). This suggests that youths with higher
SOC tend to adopt a somewhat more negative stance toward criminal behavior.
When the analyses were conducted separately for boys and girls, similar
correlations were found: for boys (ρ = 0.23, p = 0.032) and for girls (ρ = 0.28, p =
0.002). The study can be regarded as a first step toward a deeper understanding of
the relationship between SOC and adolescents' attitudes toward criminality and
should be seen as a pilot study for further research. Additional studies are needed
to investigate the relationship more thoroughly and to clarify its potential causes
and practical implications. (Less) - Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
