- Abstract
- This study aimed to explore the support available in Sweden for individuals seeking to leave a gang-involved criminal lifestyle, as well as how they perceived the support. A purposive sample was used for our semi-structured interviews, comprising two former gang members, two social workers, and two representatives from non-governmental organizations. We analyzed the factors that both enable and obstruct the desistance process. Our analysis was grounded in Labelling Theory (Becker 2006) and Social Support Theory (Cullen 1994), focusing on concepts such as deviant career, emotional support, and instrumental support.
Our findings showed that the exit process is highly individual and often complex, with both emotional and practical support... Our findings showed that the exit process is highly individual and often complex, with both emotional and practical support being essential. Trust in support providers and employment opportunities emerged as key factors for a successful reintegration into society. However, these were often hindered by social stigma and delays in institutional support. The study concluded that more individualized and long-term interventions are needed and suggested further research into gender differences and delays in institutional support. (Less)
